Summer Challenge #4: Moon

Written July 23rd through July 25th for the prompt "Evolution" from the GacktJOB fics summer challenge. I wanted to write something a little bit mind-bendy, we'll see if it came out. Description: Gackt is becoming a vampire, or is he?

When he thought about it too hard, it was tough to pinpoint when it all began, or if it had even begun at all—except that it was happening, which meant it must have started somewhere, unless it had always been like this.

He was pretty sure it hadn't always been like this. Certainly it was getting worse.

“You look a little pale,” Chachamaru said, sliding down to sit in the chair next to him. “You feeling alright?”

Gackt scrutinized his reflection. Pale, yeah, he did look pale. Deathly pale even. He shrugged, “I'm tired I guess.”

Chachamaru nodded, “Yeah, you've been working really hard. Try to take it easy for a little bit if you can. Doesn't do anyone any good if you overwork yourself to an early grave.”

He didn't respond, instead just continued staring lethargically at his reflection.

Chachamaru looked at him for a moment longer, than clapped him on the shoulder, as he stood, “I'll see you tomorrow, okay? Just let me know if you need anything.”

By day he kept the curtains drawn, hiding from the sun's hot glare, unable to rest by daylight. By night he couldn't sleep. The moon was singing to him. He'd always had a fascination with the moon, but now it seemed like the damn thing just wouldn't leave him alone. When had it gotten so bad?

“I used to love the moon...”

It's a love he can't seem to escape.

Snap! You's fingers clicked together in front of his face, “Oy, Earth to Gackt.”

He turned slowly away from the window to look somewhat blankly at his bandmate and good friend. “What?”

“I was asking about the new song we've been practicing, but I guess you've actually had enough of work for today.”

“No, if it needs working on, we should do it,” Gackt intoned, although his heart wasn't in it. He could see that You could tell something was up, but he didn't seem to understand. Of course, Gackt was usually a driving force when it came to work but with the moon so distracting...

Couldn't You hear it, too?

You strummed a few lines on his guitar, and Gackt ground his teeth. It clashed horribly. The song had sounded good earlier, but now...

“Just stop,” he snapped. “Forget it, go home, I don't care. I can't do this right now.”

Turning a bewildered eyes on him, You slowly lowered his guitar, “Okay, whatever you say.” He started to clean up, Gackt leaned back in his chair tearing his gaze away from the moon out the window to stare at the ceiling instead. There was a spot of dirt; he focused on that in an attempt to escape the moon's inescapable lure.

You clattered around, clearly trying not to be too loud but somehow managing to be infuriatingly noisy. Gackt focused on the dirt.

“Okay, well, I'll see you tomorrow.” You said.

Gackt ignored him.

Worse even still than the moon was the thirst. No matter how much he drank he couldn't seem to satiate it. No matter what he drank, it didn't go away. With the coming of the thirst had come a loss of appetite. His food was like ash in his mouth, he couldn't tell ramen from rice. It was getting worse day by day.

He slammed down the eyeliner in irritation. His reflection was so pale and watery that he couldn't hardly see anything. How was he supposed to get his eyeliner on like that?

“What the hell is wrong with this mirror anyway?” He snapped.

You and Chachamaru exchanged looks. Then Chacha said somewhat tentatively, “There's nothing wrong with the mirror Gackt...”

“I can't freaking see myself,” Gackt grumbled.

“Maybe you should get an eye exam,” You suggested.

Gackt glowered at him—he could see You and Chacha's anxious faces clear as day. “My eyes are just fine,” he snarled, and turned back to shoving the eyeliner in the blurry area that must be his eye as if he could possibly apply it by feel alone. Behind him he heard Chachamaru's retreating footsteps. He felt strangely like the other man was running away from him.

He shook it off.

You put a hand gently on his, “Here, let me do it. You'll make a mess of it.” He said, voice soothing. Begrudgingly, Gackt accepted, turning to face his friend, and sitting still so the other man could apply his eyeliner.

“Close your eyes, okay? I feel like I'm going to poke them out,” You joked with a weak smile.

Obediently, Gackt closed his eyes. Felt the eyeliner as You carefully drew around his eye. There was an odd thrumming sound filling his ears, what was it? It seemed to be coming from You, he cracked an eyelid, nothing looked amiss.

“Hey, whoa,” You reprimanded, “not done here.”

He shut it again, but didn't let You finish, instead leaning forward to rest his head on the other man's chest with a soft groan of frustration.

“You okay?” You asked, letting his hand drop to rest gently on Gackt's hair, and teasing a few strands of it absently.

Gackt inhaled. You smelled... Intoxicating. Delicious. He slid up, following the pounding of You's heart to thrumming of his blood through his veins and leaning into the other man's neck...

“Ouch! Hey! Stop that,” You shoved him away, looking at him with wild eyes, “What the hell was that?”

Gackt stared at him for a long moment, then turned and fled.

What was happening to him? At first he'd thought it was a combination of insomnia and overwork, but if that was the case, why couldn't he remember when it started? Why did it seem like it had always been like this?

He stared at the mirror—tried tilting his head and looking at it out of the corner of his eye. Where had his reflection gone?

“What is it?” Chachamaru asked.

He knew better than to say he couldn't see his reflection. It wasn't his eyes, he was sure of that. So he just shook his head and turned away. “It's nothing.”

Gackt's eyes were drawn to Chachamaru's throat and he imagined he could see the blood pulsing under the other man's skin. He was so thirsty...

Suddenly he lunged for the other man, knocking a chair aside in his haste and bringing the guitarist to the floor. Straddling him he grabbed a handful of long blond hair and pulled the other man closer. Inhaling the delicious scent that led him to the other man's neck.

There was a pounding of feet, and he was unexpectedly shoved off of Chachamaru and onto the floor. He looked up wildly to see You staring at him.

“What are you doing?!”

He didn't even know.

Blood. Reflections. Pale. The moon. Blood. Thirst. The sun's cruel glare. Blood. It all came back to one thing. There could be only one answer.

Go here for the next fic in this sequence: Thirst

This was very good. The tension in Gackt- the realization of the truth just under the surface, and the denial of that truth, very powerful. Will you continue it sometime?

I LIKE IT! I want more.

(Of course, I'm a sucker (ha!) for vampire stories, but this is great). I really hope you consider continuing this (in either direction, like when he may have gotten infected or how it came about, and after this). <3 + 1,000

My ideas don't come to me very chronologically, so it's easy for me to think "How did they get here" and go backwards XD

You're an excellent writer, and I hope life eases up on you a bit ^_^
