Summer Challenge #8: Omen

Written August 22nd through August 25th for the prompt 'A Night Out' from the GacktJOB fics summer challenge. This one is a bit more of a cliff-hanger than I like to write... I prefer things to sort of almost stand on there own just in case I never get around to writing anything else related to it. This is a follow up to 'Thirst'. I had to end it where I did because I couldn't decide who the mysterious man is! Someone Gackt doesn't actually know? Or is it someone he knows but simply doesn't immediately recognize even though he should? Hyde? Yoshiki? There's so many possibilities... Description: Gackt and You go out on the town a few days after Gackt first drank You's blood, but while there out they encounter some unexpected people who seem to have something to do with how he became this way. Takes place after 'Thirst'.

Go here for Moon and Thirst, this fic takes place after both of those.

A salty sweet, oddly metallic taste, warm and tangy on his tongue. When had this happened before? He doesn't remember, but surely it can't have been this good. If he takes a deep breath, inhales the thrilling scent, maybe, just maybe, he might remember.

The summer days had finally given in and allowed them a brief respite from the heat, for which Gackt was secretly grateful, although You was probably even more grateful than he was—since he'd had to put bandages on his neck after Gackt drank his blood, he was now wearing a lightweight scarf to cover up the evidence. If it were still blazingly hot outside it would have undoubtedly been unbearable.

“So where are we going?” Gackt asked You.

You just said mysteriously, “You'll see.” Gackt wasn't sure why they were going out, he didn't really want to and he had firmly insisted he would not go out by daylight. Consequently, You had drug him out after dark for a night on the town. He'd wanted them to meet up with Chachamaru and some of the others, but Gackt had refused. He was too worried about what they would think even if You apparently wasn't. He suspected that this whole outing was somehow supposed to make him feel more human, or somehow prove that he was capable of continuing as if nothing had ever happened. He doubted it would work.

You certainly was managing to act like nothing had really changed, even though he probably should have been afraid or at least grossed out after Gackt sucking out his life energy. Gackt didn't understand how the other man did it. It was amazing really.

He stuck his hands in his pockets—more for something to do than because they were really cold—and ducked his head against the glare of the streetlights.

“The lights are bright, huh?” You said, noticing his discomfort. “Too bad you can't wear sunglasses at night without standing out. It'd draw way too much attention.”

Gackt let him prattle on like that for a while, slowly zoning out the other man's words and paying attention only to the rhythm of their footsteps echoing of the sidewalk.

Sometimes he thought he could sense things that weren't there. Like Obi-wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker, he would simply be able to proclaim “I have a bad feeling about this,” and it would turn out to be true. He'd always been able to sense things other people couldn't, the spirits of the dead had been plaguing him since childhood, but it seemed like now there was something else out there.

The moon's singing seemed to be getting louder, and if he listened closely, surely it would tell him something.

No longer watching where he was going, focused solely on the eerie way their footsteps chimed against the moon's music and wondering if it were some sort of omen, he ran face first into someone.

His first thought was to be irritated. He'd been following You, how had this guy gotten between them? His second thought was dismay—he'd been recognized.

“Gackt-san!” An oddly familiar voice exclaimed.

He flicked his eyes up to the face of the man he'd run into and instantly realized who it was, “Ah, Jun-ji, it's been awhile.” He managed to say as if everything were perfectly normal.

“Imagine seeing you here! This is great!” Jun-ji enthused, but as he spoke Gackt's attention was drawn away again as the hairs on the back of his neck prickled in anticipation. Instinctively he tilted his head to look to Jun-ji's side.

There was nothing exceptional there, just another familiar musician, Ju-ken. They were good friends—he couldn't be the source of his unease, but as there eyes met he saw a mirrored understanding there and he knew that somehow Ju-ken was the cause of his discomfort.

You was saying something back to Jun-ji—they were good friends too, after all—but Gackt ignored what he was saying and grabbed You by the arm, “Sorry, but we have to get going.”

Both You and Jun-ji looked confused as he hauled his best friend away, but he ignored any protests that either made and kept going. He noticed that—incriminatingly, he thought—Ju-ken said nothing.

Ever since he bit You, it felt like there was something just beyond his reach that he should remember. A name maybe? Perhaps not. A face? Certainly. The harder he thought about it, the harder to grasp it became. It floated away from him as he snatched for it like cherry blossoms blowing in the wind.

He stopped finally, panting slightly, outside a small drearily lit bar that he'd never seen before.

“Well, that was weird.” You, gasping for breath beside him, said, “Do you even know where we are?”

Gackt shook his head, feeling a little sheepish for his reaction, yet somehow still justified.

“Thank God for the miracle of GPS,” You said, pulling out his phone and looking at it for a moment, then he glanced at the bar, “well, I don't really want to walk all the way back there, did you want to just go in here?”

The moon was singing loudly now, and it was grating on his nerves. He decided that going inside might just shelter him a little from it, so he said simply, “Sure, why not?”

As they entered the bar though, the sound of the moon grew only louder, and Gackt swayed clutching feebly at You's arm.

“Are you okay?” You asked, voice concerned.

Gackt shook his head in a way that probably couldn't be distinguished between yes or no and was overall more like a wet dog shaking itself than anything else. “I'm... fine.”

“Here, I'll get you a drink, maybe it'll help. Er, um... Nothing alcoholic though I guess. The way you look that's probably a bad idea. What would you like?”

“You pick,” Gackt said, “it's all the same to me.”

For a brief moment something like trepidation crossed You's features—probably remembering the one thing Gackt wanted to drink—but then he smoothed it away and deftly steered Gackt over to the bar.

“We'll need a beer and a cola,” he said to the bartender.

As the man fetched the two items for them, Gackt felt his feeling of dread growing. Forcing himself to ignore it, he took the cola and sipped it, ignoring also it's unappealing taste. Behind him he heard like some sort of superhuman the nearly silent squeak of the door opening and the tapping of feet crossing the threshold.

He turned, moon singing in his ears like the climax of some strange symphony, and the cola fell from his hands to shatter on the floor.

In the door was a man he felt like he ought to know but whose name and face he couldn't place, and standing behind him was Ju-ken.

Uncontrollable dread. Fear. Footsteps pounding and his own breathing harsh in his ears. He knows now he can't escape and as the figure descends upon him, suddenly he wonders if he even wants to.

I'm starting to get an idea who it might be ^^ It won't be this week though, because it doesn't fit the challenge prompt so I've put it on a short hold XD

I totally understand, sometimes those ideas just don't want to do what their told XD That's always happening to me

Yeah, it's hard to get things written sometimes XD I hope to stick around writing JOB fics, but I've been neglecting my favorite pairing (L'arc~en~ciel is my big OTP, especially Yukido) so I'm gonna have to try to get more of a balance ^^ Fortunately, L'arc goes well with JOB XD

I've certainly got to get vampire Gackt some closure at the very least! XDD
